Doing the Right Thing When We Don't Feel Like It!

Choosing the right path

It has been said that if you want to be successful then we have to find a way to do things even when we don’t feel like doing them. So, we may want to exercise, or study, or finish our work, or do the dishes, (the list is endless); but we just don’t feel like doing it.

It is like we often find ourselves on a road with two gateways. One gate goes towards the life that we want, where we are acting like the person we want to be. The other gate sometimes looks easier to open, but takes us in the opposite direction. How do we make the right choices?

1. Slow Down. Consciously slow down your breathing and your movements. As the philosopher Victor Frankl said, “Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom”. Slowing down helps to make this space bigger!

2. Take Note. Mostly we take the wrong gate when we are on ‘autopilot’. The antidote to being on autopilot is to be conscious of what is happening in this present moment.

3. Open Up. Rather than running away from the uncomfortable thoughts and feelings, (like, “I don’t feel like doing it”), open up to them but ‘stay put’. You can still make choices to take these thoughts and feelings with you as you go through the gate of your choice.

4. Pursue Your Values. Remind yourself of the life you want and the person you want to be.
