DEMENTIA CARERS

Outlook South West has been commissioned by NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly and Cornwall Council to deliver a programme of information sessions to carers who live at home looking after their loved ones with dementia or memory loss.

The free informational support is co-ordinated and delivered by Outlook South West’s Dementia Carer Team, made up of Jo Hague, Nicolle Mitchell and Katie Matthews. Visiting towns right across Cornwall, the team delivers information sessions, as well as supporting memory cafes, cognitive stimulation therapy groups and occasional home visits to reach carers in the community.

The information sessions consist of the following subjects:

• What is dementia?
• Coping with change
• Understanding behaviours that challenge
• Helping wellbeing through occupation
• Caring for the carer
• Communication
• Diet and wellbeing
• Driving
• Medication
• Creating a life story book and holistic approaches for maintaining wellbeing
• Personal Life History tool – ‘All about me’
• End stage dementia
• Practical planning for the future

Through the delivery of these subjects, attendees gain new knowledge, skills and confidence designed to aid them in their role as a carer.

The information sessions that are run by the Dementia Carer Team are free, but booking is required. You can find out more or can book onto a session by calling (01208) 871904.
